Gadget News - Amazon Tablet to be Unveiled as Kindle Fire
Amazon is about to hold a press conference tomorrow (September 28). Apart from the location and time, nothing else was revealed in the invitations, but the tech community speculates that it could be the unveiling of Amazon’s new Kindle tablet, which they say would be named “Kindle Fire.”
The tablet will feature a 7-inch backlit display, a TI dual-core OMAP chip, a 1.2GHz CPU, and looks similarly like the BlackBerry PlayBook, probably because it was designed and built by the same design manufacturer, Quanta. Although Amazon has its own team for Kindle design and development, the company wants to get the Kindle Fire out in time for the holiday season (and probably to steal the new Nook Color 2’s thunder), hence they outsourced most of the units. Note that the image is based on a mock-up provided by TechCrunch.
The Kindle Fire tablet will not be ready for shipping until the second week of November, according to sources

Sony Releases XBA Series Headphones
When it comes to audio quality, it seems that people may have different preferences. This can become more obvious through choice of headphones. While a certain set of headphones may do for one person, it might not be that sufficient for the other. This is primarily the reason why Sony has recently launched a new XBA series of headphones, set to cater to the different audio quality needs of its customers.
The recent announcement of the new Sony XBA Series of headphones may be a bit too much with a selection of seven different headphones introduced, Sony may have done so with reason. The seven new Sony XBA headphones cater to the different needs of users.

Window 8 Preview Sounds Impressive, So Far
It may be months away before Microsoft formally launches its Windows 8, but the company has unveiled a preview of its next-gen OS to developers and members of the press. Based on the images provided, the next version of Windows is radically different from its predecessors.
Microsoft has also provided Windows 8-powered Samsung text tablets to tech bloggers and reporters for hands-on treatment. The initial reviews have been favorable.
“My first impressions are so favorable that even Apple should be on alert,” writes Edward Baig of USA Today. The preview, however, only provides a miniscule of Windows 8’s full potential. Test tablets do not allow software uploads and do not have Microsoft Office, although Microsoft insists that Windows 7 programs “will work even better” on Windows 8.
The highlight of this upcoming OS is a customizable user layout called “Metro,” which features touchable tiles of different sizes on the Start screen. It enables users live updates about the stock market or the weather. The screen reminds one of what is already seen on Windows Phones. Dragging one’s finger from the right edge of the screen to the middle reveals five hidden icons called “Charms,” which represents search, share, devices, settings, and a button that returns the user to Start. Dragging the finger from the left edge of the screen to the middle takes the user back to the previous screen.
There are several Metro apps preloaded into the tablet, such as an Ink Pad app that uses a digitized pen to jot handwritten notes. There is also a piano app, paint program, student flash cards, and a Twitter program. These apps are produced by Microsoft interns. A Metro-style version of the Internet Explorer 10 is also preloaded, featuring a navigation bar that appears only when the user needs it and also informs them if the site has an associated Metro app. Favorite websites can also be “pinned” to the Windows Start screen.
Windows 8 is supposed to work on tablets that run on ARM processors, as well as standard personal computers and laptops. The OS preview features two touch keyboard on the tablet: A full-size QWERTY keyboard with large buttons and a thumb keyboard that splits the onscreen keyboard into two. The test tablet can also be hooked to a wireless physical Bluetooth keyboard. Microsoft also announces that a built-in Windows Store will be included in Windows 8, featuring apps that will be prescreened for viruses.
With the looks of it, Windows 8 shows a lot of promise.

Retrieva GPS Dog Collar Helps Locate Lost Pooch
Pet dogs used to have microchips containing owner’s information implanted into their skin so the animals can be traced to their homes in case they get lost. Nowadays, GPS can also be used to track where their pets roam. The Retrieva GPS dog tracker is a collar with three years of research and development, promising that it can outperform any other tracking product for pets.
The makers of Retrieva assures dog owners that their tracking and anti-theft collar can do what other similar devices failed to do. This waterproof gadget can provide live tracking and location data straight to the owner’s smartphone, iPad, or computer. Retrieva can plot itself on digitally-enhanced topographical mapping or satellite mapping images.
Apart from location tracking, this collar alerts the owner if the dog decides to leave home without their knowledge. It also features a power management system that makes this device last between five to seven days before recharging, unlike similar tracking devices that forces owners to charge it every day.
Retrieva also makes it difficult to remove by anyone other than the owner, even alerting them if such an attempt is taking place. There is also a personal panic button found on the buckle, which sends location data to selected phones or e-mail addresses.
The Retrieva GPS dog collar can be purchased or rented on its official site. Check it out for pricing range and shipping options.

Case-Mate iPhone 5 Cases Leaked
Yes, this is another iPhone 5 speculation report, but this time with a little bit of credibility. Case-Mate accidentally(?) posted product pages of iPhone 5 cases like this one before pulling them out and replaced them with a single landing page. We do not get to see much of the iPhone 5, but judging on how the rear camera is placed, its tapered back, and thinner casing, this next-gen smartphone looks like a combination of iPad 2 and the current iPod Touch.
It is unlikely that Case-Mate is using actual iPhone 5 units on these leaked images, as they look like renders anyway. However, the company is mostly likely designed these iPhone 5 cases according to known specs.
Apple is said to announce the iPhone 5 in the coming weeks, which France Telecom CEO Stéphane Richard claims to be on October 15. The new smartphone is expected to be launched first in United States and Europe.

Sony Presents Docks for iPhones and iPads
You can find iPhone docks everywhere, but not so much iPad docks. Sony has recently announced two new models that work with the iPhone and iPod Touch, one of which can also play with the iPad.
The iPad-friendly RDP-X500iP features “Clear Phase DSP, DMC technology, Dual Passive Radiators, and Magnetic Fluid Speakers.” We are not sure how these specs are able to produce high-quality audio, but it better be considering its $299 suggested retail price.
Meanwhile, the ICF-CS15iP do not have the fancy-sounding specs and instead features Mega Bass and Mega Xpand sound modes, along with multi-function alarm clock and AM/ FM radio. This iPhone and iPod Touch dock is expected to hit Sony Stores on October 2011 for only $99.

Vintage NASA-Owned Cameras Up For Auction
You may not know Arthur Keir, but if you love retro technology, you better be. His estate has put up his precious collection of NASA-owned cameras for auction, like the Nikon F Photomic T (1965) you see on the picture.
Keir has a collection of NASA paraphenalia that spans for decades and it is sad that he would have to sell them off because of seems like a liquidation. But hey, at least he would make another maniacal collector happy. Other cameras that are being auctioned include Nikon F’s successor the Nikon F2 (1978) and a bulky Canon L2 video camera that joined the Space Shuttle Columbia on an out-of-Earth mission in 1998.
Not into photography? The auction also offers NASA-related stuff ranging from a glove bladder to thermal slippers, both of which were meant for extra-vehicular activity. Note that the prices of these cameras are on the steep side. The lowest-priced camera is currently at $300 as of this posting. You can check out the rest of the collection being auctioned here.
